Got a wonderful package in the mail today, courtesy of paranormal investigator, Benjamin Radford.
He’d recently been promoting limited edition copies of his book, Mysterious New Mexico: Miracles, Magic, and Monsters in the Land of Enchantment (2014), on Facebook, and because I admire his work—I’ve mentioned one of his books in context with discussing the Highgate Vampire case (Hogg 2011)—I figured I’d score a copy.
The final clincher, for me, was reading an excellent article he’d written about the Ferguson riots and why blaming “the media” is a misguided affair (Radford 2014). Knowing that he’d also written a book about the media—Media Mythmakers: How Journalists, Activists, and Advertisers Mislead us (2003)—I figured I’d get a copy of that book, too. Saves on shipping.
We got the prices and shipping rates sorted via Facebook chat and he promised to throw in a few goodies. My copy of Mysterious New Mexico (“Limited First Fifty Edition: 37 of 50”), for instance, has several colour photographs tucked inside its pages. He also included a PlayingGods.com bookmark, PlayingGods.com sticker (featuring Buddha wielding a Gatling machine gun), a flyer for his other books, and this beauty:
It’s also the clue as to why I’m writing about him here: Radford is also the author of Tracking the Chupacabra: The Vampire Beast in Fact, Fiction, and Folklore (2011), which documents his investigation into the mysterious—supposedly extraterrestrial—”goat sucker” most prominently reported in Puerto Rico. Be sure to score yourself a copy.
You can also contact him to score limited editions of Mysterious New Mexico. He’s got 5 copies left, otherwise, order the standard print and Kindle through Amazon. At the very least, be blown away by its awesome cover. Radford can be reached via Facebook or his website.
